BYTE’s new theatre piece will be touring in early 2019.
What country friends is this? is a new theatre piece devised by the 2019-ensemble and
Joachim Matschoss with music by young composers Tom Pitts and Olivia Smith. It features
Casey Bohan, Anna Lyons, Megan Mitchell and Olivia Smith.
What country friends is this? sees Viola (Twelfth Night’s heroine) to land in Illyria which
looks part forest of Arden, part contemporary city. Viola disguises herself to explore this
strange place and tries to find employment and bumps into Juliet (who has just met Romeo
at that infamous party). Love hits and a confused Cesario (Viola) runs away, meeting other
Shakespearian heroines along the way. The theatre piece deals with identity, relationships,
love, gender and what it means to be young in today’s times. Above all it explores
Shakespeare’s themes in a fun way. Soliloquies become songs and the audience will not
escape the magic of love.

It is presented by BYTE (BackYardTheatreEnsemble), an independent company that
produces theatre dedicated to devised issue-based work nationally and internationally for
many years.
What country friends is this? will be shown on a bare stage with an ensemble of four
actors/singers. They share their thoughts and their innermost feelings with the audience.
This is a piece of theatre that includes original songs. It part comic, moving and thought-

What country friends is this? will premiere in Melbourne/Australia, before touring in late
February to April 2019 to HongKong, China, Thailand, Singapore, Germany, the United
Kingdom, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, the USA and the Netherlands.
Joachim Matschoss is a poet and playwright from Melbourne/Australia. He has collaborated
with Melbourne based composer Tom Pitts on many projects.

Companies join forces to bring Les Misérables to the stage

Warrnambool’s passion for musical theatre has united two of the region’s
oldest theatre companies, in one vision. The partnership will see Holiday
Actors and the Warrnambool Theatre Company join forces to launch the
highly acclaimed production of Les Misérables in July, 2019.
The joint production of the musical phenomenon will assemble a cast of
around 50 people from throughout the region, both young and old.
Holiday Actors President Janet Punch believes that the collaboration will
provide opportunities for young talent to work with Warrnambool’s theatre
“Les Misérables is a powerful musical that is set against the sweeping
backdrop of 19th century France, and tells an enthralling story of passion, love,
forgiveness and redemption. The two companies are thrilled to be bringing
this breathtaking musical to Warrnambool, enabling the extraordinary talents
of all ages to participate,” she said.
Warrnambool Theatre Company President Ailiche Goddard-Clegg is proud
that the two companies are working together to broaden theatrical horizons.
“Teamwork is at the heart of theatre; it takes an army of individuals, both on
stage and off, working together to produce great theatre. Both companies will
continue to prosper with this inclusive, collaborative approach. Les Misérables
is sure to be a spectacle like none other – and one not to be missed!” she
The companies are now looking for experienced Directors to take the helm of
